Valentine Printable Activities for Upper Elementary
How do you manage to contain the crazy on Valentine’s Day with your kiddos? Do you cross your fingers and hope you survive until party time? I use to do that until I decided to embrace the crazy with fun and engaging Valentine printable worksheets that have my students super engaged while learning.
Why Embrace the Crazy?
Why should you embrace the crazy? I’ll tell you why, because you can’t change it! So, you might as well find a way to make the day work for you not against you. The kiddos are super excited. They all have those adorable Valentine Boxes ready to be filled with sweet notes and treats from their friends. So to keep your sanity go with it.
Keep Them Engaged with Valentine Printable Activites!
The key to a sweet day is keeping the kids busy. Anytime you can keep them active and engaged; the time seems to fly by and before you know it the day is over. So my first tip is to keep them busy is to use hands-on activities to pass the time. A great way to do that is with Conversation Hearts! These cute little candies open your classroom to a world of possibilities, plus you can eat them when you’re finished.
In my classroom, we have been using this heart-shaped candy for years. One of my student’s favorite hands-on activities is graphing with the famous pastel colored candies. I buy the mini boxes of Conversation Hearts that we use with several different valentine printable worksheets. We begin by opening the boxes and graphing the colors. What is not to love about graphing with candy? After we complete our graph, we start practicing our fraction skills. Students will create fractions based on their colored hearts. The last activity we do before eating the candy is practicing finding mean, median, mode, and range. It is a win-win, the kids love the valentine printable worksheets, and I’m still getting lots of excellent math content covered in a fun and engaging way.
History of Conversation Hearts
This year I will be adding a new activity to my valentine printable game plan. I don’t know about you, but my kiddos love to read informational passages about fun topics. Can you think of a more fun topic than Conversation Hearts? My 5th graders will be reading a Valentine printable reading passage then working in small groups to answer the comprehension questions that go along with the reading passage. My students find the informational text very interesting. This activity is a terrific way for students to review previously taught reading skills on a fun, engaging topic.
Get Them Up and Moving with Valentine Printable Task Cards!
Now that you have made it thru a large chunk of the day you are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My guess is by this point you are getting close to lunch now, and they are starting to get antsy, am I right? So get them out of those seats and moving to work that energy out! I love a good game of Scoot! Use Valentine printable task cards to practice a variety of skills. Being the math teacher, I like to practice multiplication and division any chance I get. We all know that if we don’t practice those skills, they are forgotten quickly. I print, and laminate task cards then place them on student desks or tape them in the hallway. We use a timer in my classroom to practice our math fluency. I set the timer for about 1 minute. Students work out the problem them Scoot to the next one when the timer goes off.
For added fun and time-saving grading on my part, I have an adorable picture of a little boy that has the answers to the task cards printed on them. The self-checking multiplication and division review printable is perfect to keep students engaged while reviewing basic operation math skills. When students work out the task card questions, they will look to see if the answer is on the page. If it is not found on the worksheet, they know they made a mathematical error. The Valentine printable is a color-coded sheet; this allows you to check your students work quickly. It also makes an adorable hallway presentation!
Party Time!
Well if you have made it to lunchtime, you are home free. It is time to get this party started! Our Valentine’s Party has a little twist; we have a Healthy Heart Party. I have my students bring in healthy foods like strawberries, apples, grapes, cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, carrots, cheese, and crackers. Oh, did I forget the cupcakes and maybe a cookie or two? Well, it is hard to have a party without a sweet treat too. It is funny. I’ve found that my students tend to eat more during our Valentine’s Day party than just about any other. Well, our Christmas breakfast is pretty popular too.
Planning the party is super easy with my editable Valentine printable party plan. I have a premade party list, and all I have to do is type in my students’ names and send the list home. The plan is editable. So, I can switch out food items if we have a particular food allergy. It makes planning and creating the Valentine party super easy. One sheet of paper tells parents what to bring, and it also has all of the students’ names on it so they can make their class Valentine’s.
